Biography: Emily
Dahlman
 A
long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … ok, so I’ve
never been a huge Star Wars fan, but I needed a way to start
the “Emily
Story” and that seemed to fit! My life is definitely not a
science fiction novel, a soap opera, a comedy, or a tragedy;
in fact it has really been a combination of all four! I promise
not to bore you with all of the details, so here goes nothing …
I was born on January 9, 1988, approximately
three weeks after my due date! It has been from this point
on, that my timeliness could be described as fashionably late!
As a child, my mom went to extreme measures to prove that I
was indeed a girl by dressing me in pink fluff and taping bows
to my head. I didn’t
have hair until I was 4 and from the ages of 4-8, I sported
a lovely mullet! I have
lived in Cokato for my entire life and am very proud of this
small community! Cokato has a population of approximately 2,727
people and is the home of the incredible Cokato Corn Carnival
where everyone in town comes together in the beginning of August
and enjoys the all-you-can-eat corn on the cob! Through elementary
school, I always wanted to be an entomologist. This idea spurred
from my first word, which happened to be “bug.”
I have been accused of being an “extra-curricular
addict.” My life is probably far from normal,
but what really is normal anyway? Let the chaos begin…at Dassel-Cokato
High School I am the Student Council President, Future Farmers
of America Chapter Reporter, Speech Captain, Volleyball and
Boys Basketball Manager, FLY Mentor, National
Honors
Society Member, Yearbook staff, and on the newspaper staff.
All of these activities and organizations on top of classes
create early-morning meetings and late nights, making school
a second home to me. I am also a very proud 4-H member and
have been since I was 6 years old! 4-H has provided me with
amazing opportunities and life-long friends! Through 4-H, I
am Wright County ambassador, camp counselor, club president,
county president, Arts-In participant and exhibitor at the
Wright County and State Fairs. I have a suspicion that my obsession
of the color green has a direct relation to my love and dedication
to the 4-H program. The newest addition made to my calendar
came on July 27th, when I was crowned Wright County Princess
of the Fair and Miss Congeniality! I have entered the world
of parades and coronations and am thoroughly enjoying the new
formals that have made their way into my closet, the crown
that sits on my head, the girls I have met, and the county
I proudly represent! That is my life in a nut shell, between
my various responsibilities, quality time with my family, socializing
with my friends, and preparing for my future, I am a typical
teenage girl with a full head of blonde hair!
I am still pinching myself that I am actually going
to China. I applied to go on this trip because I’m always up
for a challenge. I love to stretch beyond the limits and see
where this experience could take me. I never imagined that
I would be selected out of all the incredible students in Minnesota.
This is why I will continue pinching myself until the moment
I return home from the trip! My arm is definitely going to
be bruised! From this trip, I hope to learn from the experience
because I will have a first-hand opportunity to learn things
that can’t
be taught in a classroom. On the trip, I will be most excited
to eat real Chinese food and drink Green Tea! On the other
hand, I am most nervous about the attention that our group
will draw towards ourselves. I am 5’10” with
blonde hair and blue eyes, and because of this, I will stand
out and every move I make will be analyzed. It’s very intimidating
knowing that I am representing each student in Minnesota!
In the movie “Forest Gump”, Forest
says, “life
is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going
to get.” As of right now, I am just going to enjoy the
new piece of chocolate I was given and just continue being
me. I know that after this trip, the person I call me will
have grown in more ways than I am aware!
