Environment

Photo collage -- a photo of a desert, the sky, and mountains. From the moment the first humans left footprints here on Earth, we have affected the environment and the environment has affected us.

We don’t merely live in our surroundings. We are shaped by them. Climate, soil conditions, availability of water, physical barriers, the abundance or scarcity of plants and animals and aquatic life, all these things and more ultimately dictate what we eat, where and how we live, and how our cultures develop as we struggle to adapt to the natural world – and sometimes even control it.

Here you’ll learn about some of environmental factors that have shaped China, and how the nation struggles to balance growth and industrial development with the need to be good stewards of the land, water and air.
