Chinese
in Minnesota
The content in this section is graciously provided by the Minnesota Historical Society. It is adapted from the book Chinese
in Minnesota, painstakingly researched by Sherri Gebert Fuller and published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press.
The Land of 10,000 Lakes is seldom, if ever, associated
with anything Chinese. Few people realize that the history of the Chinese
community dates as far back as those groups typically considered Minnesota’s pioneers.
While immigrants of European descent long ago found their place in the history books, Chinese immigrants have only slowly been recognized for their struggles and tenacity in the face of harsh immigration laws and job discrimination that persisted well into the 20th Century.
Influencing and shaping Minnesota history since the early 1870s, Chinese in Minnesota by 2000 numbered 18,622 people and are a vital force in professional, cultural and educational spheres throughout the state.
Here, you’ll find the story of how Chinese immigrants came to Minnesota – and
then became Minnesotans. It is a fascinating and unique story that began more
than a century ago, a story that is still being written today.
Chinese immigrants in the 19th century struggled to
make a home for themselves in the United States. Despite harsh immigration
restrictions and job discrimination that persisted well into the 20th
century, Chinese people managed to put down roots in all parts of the
country. By 2002, the Chinese community in Minnesota numbered more than
18,000 people and it remains a vital force throughout the state.
