Agriculture

Photo collage -- photos of food and farming. We may have different ways to wok it, deep-fry it, bake it, boil it, roast it, broil it, steam it, dry it, nuke it, pickle it, poach it. We may have different tastes and appetites. We may have different ways to serve it and gobble it up. But we all must eat.

Food is so much more than just something to munch on. It’s an expression of who we are, of where we come from. And it is a daily reminder of our dependence upon the Earth to nourish us.

In Minnesota and China, we are people of the land who share a history of strong agrarian values. To us, farming is a means of survival and a cherished way of life. But in both places, farmers struggle with the evolution of an industry in which small family farms are increasingly unable to compete with large-scale operations. Today, our farmers also share the challenges of feeding a hungry world, while at the same time working to better protect agricultural lands and waterways from chemical pollution, soil erosion, and depletion.

Here, you’ll find some food for thought about agriculture. Go ahead, eat it up!
